Alban Bagbin elected Speaker of 8th Parliament

The former Member of Parliament for Nadowli Kaleo and a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has been elected as the Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

Mr. Bagbin, who was the Second Deputy Speaker in the previous Parliament won the elections against his only contender, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) proposed Alban Bagbin as their choice candidate for the Speaker of Parliament while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) proposed Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye who served as Speaker for the 7th Parliament; 2017 to 2021.

The election of Bagbin was not without controversy as several alien incidents characterized the night including the invasion of military personnel into the parliamentary chamber.

Earlier, the NDC Members of Parliament, clad in white, moved to sit on the right side of the Speaker to indicate they were in the majority which sparked serious controversy.

Later the issue of allowing the MP-elect for Assin North, Richard Quayson to vote in the election came up strongly as the Clerk who superintended over the voting process indicated that he would not allow him to cast his ballot because a court injunction had been granted to bar him from holding himself out as the MP.

That issue was resolved and the NDC MP allowed to vote subsequently.

During counting of the ballots, the Member of Parliament for Tema West and former Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry ran to the table and snatched the uncounted ballots of Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye and attempted to bolt with it.

The Chief Whip on the NDC side and MP for Asawase, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak immediately went after him and secured the ballots.

Ghanaian fraud boy imprisoned after charming his victims into sending him £800,000 to fund his luxury gold-plated mansion

A Ghanaian fraudster who posed as an American major general to swindle thousands of pounds from lonely British women he met through online dating sites has been jailed.

Maurice Asola Fadola charmed vulnerable lonely women during his 'Rom Con' scam, sending flowers on their birthdays and bombarding them with flattering messages and poetry.

But he would soon claim to be in some sort of financial difficulty and ask the often widowed pensioners to send cash his way - which he used to pay for a lavish gold-plated mansion in his home country.

The conman, believed to be in his 40s, has now been unmasked as one of the world's most prolific online dating fraudsters as his callous crimes left some victims penniless and even HOMELESS.

At least 19 British victims were spun an elaborate web of lies as Fadola used pictures of US Army servicemen plundered from the web to claim he was serving in Iraq and needed cash for emergency medical treatment, customs charges or even to buy his way out of the army.

In all, he is believed to have conned 19 British victims out of around £800,000.

Fraud: The mansion near the Ghanaian capital of Accra where detectives tracked down Fadola

After almost three years of heartache and accusations, Fadola has now been sentenced in his native country to five years in prison and ordered to repay his victims in full.

One victim, 71-year-old grandmother Katherine Clark from Southsea, Hampshire, travelled to Ghana to give evidence against Fadola.

She had lost her husband 30 years previously and was charmed by the conman, who this time claimed to be a British builder named Bruce living in London.

Speaking to Sky News in 2011, she said: "He made feel great, he made me feel wanted and that he was genuine. It was a nice feeling."

Fadola soon told Ms Clark he was moving to Ghana and encouraged her to send money to him to invest in a mining company.

She even travelled to the West African country at one point to meet 'Bruce' and encountered Fadola - who was pretending to be Bruce's driver.

He took her to Fadola's luxury marble-clad mansion, showed her a case of gold to prove the investment was genuine and then said Bruce was in prison and needed her money for bail.

On another occasion, 57-year-old widow Dena White, of East Yorkshire, lost her home after she re-mortgaged her property and used £50,000 of her savings to help 'Steve Moon' in a legal dispute over the impounding of his war medals.

Fadola - posing as Moon - said he couldn't access his own cash because he was serving in Iraq.

The pair chatted through a dating website for hours each day.

Speaking to the Daily Mail after he was unmasked, she said: "Of course I was wary but everything he told me seemed to check out.

"He’d send me poetry. It sounds silly now but we were in love."

Fadola was snared when he tried to obtain a British visa which disclosed his true identity to the National Crime Agency, who were investigating a case where a disabled woman had been persuaded to sell her house and send funds to Ghana.

He is believed to have targeted women across Britain, France, Sweden, Italy and the US and was found guilty of more than 20 offences stemming from his 2012 trial.

Court orders public sector workers to return to work

A court in Accra has granted an ex parte application ordering public sector workers across the country to call off their strike and return to work immediately.

The court granted the application Friday afternoon.

Government has been trying to use court processes to compel striking public sector workers to call off their strike.

Twelve worker unions – Ghana Medical Association, Registered Nurses Association, Ghana National Association of Teachers, Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Coalition of Local Government Staff Association of Ghana, etc – called a strike last week in protest against government’s decision to choose a trustee to manage their tier two pension contributions.

According to the workers, the National Pension Act requires them to choose who manages their Tier Two pension contribution of 5.5 per cent.

Government has insisted that funds are safe.

But the workers insist that government acted unilaterally in choosing a private company, the Pension Alliance Trust to manage the fund.

Government last week issued a writ at the High Court seeking a "Declaration that on a true and proper construction of Section 129 and 211 of the National Pensions Act, 2008 (Act 766), government is the employer of all public sector workers and is consequently entitled to appoint a trustee or trustees in relation to the Second Tier Pension Scheme."

In her writ, the Attorney-General (A-G), Mrs Marietta Brew Oppong-Appiah is seeking an alternative declaration that "upon on a true and proper construction of Section 129 and 211 of the National Pensions Act, 2008 (Act 766), neither an employee nor a representative of such employee is by law entitled to sponsor an employee-sponsored scheme or a master trust scheme in relation to the Second Tier Pension."

But before that case is determined, an ex parte application was sent to court which has granted.

Tigo Music Unplugged Concert Report; Sarkodie,Davido, MzVee, 4×4 entertain fans

The concert organized by Tigo Ghana to launch their new product Tigo Music , a music streaming app made in partnership with Deezer.

I couldn't  make it to the event but big ups to the organizers who made it possible  to watch the whole show online through their live stream (tigomusic.com.gh).

Amekor Shola Evershed was there and these were her thoughts on the event

The Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, October 31, 2014 resounded to electrifying performances from Sarkodie, 4×4, Guru, MzVee, Shatta Wale and Nigerian showstopper, Davido. The concert was made free by the organizers and so it attracted thousands of music lovers who thronged the sports stadium to witness  performances from these  acts. DJ Black set the packed auditorium ablaze with wide selection of songs with  YFM host, Norkus as MC on the night.

Before the official arts billed for the show made appearances; Rashid Metal, Rudeboi Ranking, Oheema, Akoo Nana among other artists mounted the stage to do their own thing. Akoo Nana on the night came up stage with three (3) ladies without brassieres and they dressed like typical dipo girls to perform – prompting  organizers to ask the ladies to leave the stage.

Hiplife trio, 4×4 was the first headliner to mount the stage around 10:17pm. They were smart, decent and elegant; factors that not only showcased their music class and maturity but also their uniqueness. Full of energy, they performed more than 10 songs including Fresh One, Waist and Power, Baby Dance which features Davido and more.Guru’s performance was cool, sensationalMzVee was just awesome, thrilling the thousands to dazzling, electrifying and exciting performances. She performed Borko Borko, Revolution, Natural Girl among other songs.

Davido created rapport with the patrons leading to the patrons taken virtually over his job and singing along. Aye, Skelewu, Gobe were some of his hit songs he performed on the night. His performance was just ordinary but then because of his hit songs, the crowd was screaming and yearning for more.

Sarkodie’s entrance caused disarray when he mounted the stage at exactly 12:56am as the crowd rushed to go near the stage to have a feel of their star. In deed the security officers had a tough time controlling the teeming crowd. Sarkodie treated patrons to good music, dropping hit upon hit songs and showmanship as well. Performing close to 25 songs such as Original, Shots on shots, Illuminati, Dangerous, Adonai, Chingam(ft. Bisa Kdei), Sarkodie as usual put up an energetic, engaging and worth-watching musical performance, leaving revelers shouting and yearning for more. In the course of his performance, Pappy Kojo and Joey B made appearances performing their Wave song as well as Realer No. He ended his performance at 2:01am. The concert ended with a performance from Shatta walearound 3:00am.

All in all, it was a concert not to have been missed, but yes Tigo Communications Network deserves a big pat at their back, thank you, Tigo!!!
